Kayaking and Paddle Boarding

1/4

Looking for a new spot to explore with your kayak or stand up paddle board?

There are two popular launching sites to access Werribee River and Port Phillip Bay, with routes recommended for experienced kayakers and paddlers.

Riverbend Historical Park – Werribee River
At Riverbend Historical Park you’ll find a sign-posted launch just off the trail near the car park, with barbecues and picnic tables also located here.

The Diversion Weir, approximately 300 metres to your left (west) blocks access in that direction with a substantial drop, so head east (right) where you can paddle for approximately 4 kilometres before returning to the park.

Werribee South Boat Ramp & Jetty – Werribee River & Port Phillip Bay
At Werribee South, you can launch from the shallow boat ramp on the far right, or from the beach areas next to the jetty.

From here you can paddle in the open water east towards Wyndham Harbour and Point Cook, or west towards Point Wilson.

You can also enter the mouth of the river and paddle upstream along Werribee River for tranquil river views, before journeying back to the bay.

For a longer, challenging paddle from the river mouth you can travel approximately 5.5 kilometres upstream along Werribee River as far as K Road Cliffs (you cannot access the water from the Cliffs themselves due to the steep sides) and past Werribee Park Golf Club before the route is blocked.

Safety Tips

  • Werribee South Foreshore area includes a swimming beach and is a very popular for fishing and boating so take care on the water, especially when launching near the boat ramp.
  • In Werribee River be aware of any recent rainfall, submerged rocks and limbs from the River Red Gums that line the river – paddle in the middle of the river.
  • Check on local conditions including weather, recent rainfall, water temperature, currents,  wind, EPA beach reports and boating rules before you paddle.
  • Carry a phone, wear a life jacket, paddle with others and let someone on land know where you’re going and how long you expect to be. Joining a SUP or kayaking club is also a great way to explore new areas together.
